Pecking Bird

Here is my reconstruction of the pecking bird from La Fantastique Epopee de Meccano. Once set in motion, the bird pecks its way down the axle.

These pictures are not photographs scanned in, rather they are pictures taken by a simply video camera hanging off of a Silicon Graphics Indy workstation.

This view of the bird is from the front. The perch that connects the bird to the upright is really a flexible coupling. It is this that allows the model to operate.

Here is a rear view of the model.

Finally, here is the entire model with the bird set ready to peck its way down. For some unexplained reason the axle looks awfuly curved in this picture even thought it is pretty straight in the model.
